The pandemic has caused many of us to neglect our appearance. Some have even joked about their “quarantine” look. Have you been searching for simple ways to improve your physical appearance that do not focus on food and fitness? Well, sit up and take note.
Just because you’re home more than you want to be, doesn’t mean you have to let your look reflect the times. I want to encourage you to practice looking your best and being your best so you can be ready to accept the unexpected opportunities that are coming your way.
Three Simple Tips to Enhance Your Appearance
Sit straight and stand tall!
Are you slouching around the house? Stand up straight, roll your shoulders back and sashay through your home with dignity. Stand in front of the mirror and see the difference. And when sitting, pretend there’s a ruler glued to your lower spine. Proper posture facilitates breathing, increases blood flow, prevents muscle fatigue, keeps your spine in alignment, and improves appearance. Notice how when you’re sitting up nice and straight, you tend to feel better and can attend to tasks for longer periods of time.
When you strut your stuff through the grocery store, pretend you are a marionette, and someone is pulling the string at the top of your head. Make a game of it. Your updated appearance may tickle you. Go ahead — laugh out loud. You may attract some attention, but that’s okay. Humor is good medicine.
Check your attitude!
There’s a connection between attitude and appearance. What are you thinking? Your thoughts have a lot to do with how you perceive yourself and the world. No matter what your circumstances, maintaining a hopeful, grateful and affirmative attitude can change things for you. What are the health benefits of maintaining a positive attitude? Everything! The more positivity you express through your thinking, your words, and your actions, the more positive experiences you will attract into your life. Having an upbeat attitude enhances your countenance and highlights your inner beauty.
Those colors look great on you!
Maintain your personal grooming rituals during these uncertain times. Grooming is the first step to a fresh appearance and precedes your wardrobe. So what are you wearing? You know the saying, “dress to impress?” The idea is to influence others with your appearance, for first impressions tend to stick. But I’d like to encourage you to look good for yourself. What colors inspire you? There’s a constructive psychological lift with that shift.
Now, I’m not saying you need to don your formal apparel while preparing a casserole. But your attire may inspire a desire to pursue gourmet delights. Maybe it’s time to trade in your old sweats for more attractive leisurewear. Looking good is associated with feeling good. And feeling good elevates your self-image and confidence.
While diet and exercise are critical lifestyle commitments that can improve your physical appearance, other considerations are important as well. Elevate your mood. Lift your spirits. Raise your expectations. Experience success and wellness on a different level. You can achieve all of this through posture, attitude, and attire.
Consider This
Why does appearance matter? What is the relationship between appearance and self-respect? Bethany Hamilton, the professional surfer who survived a shark attack said, “Our health and well-being is something that we can almost control, to a certain extent. We can choose to eat healthy, we can choose to think positively, and we can choose to have good posture. All this stuff makes a difference, and the way that you look and feel, and your confidence.”
