Love, Service and Self-Improvement Are Interconnected

How are you doing with the goals you set at the beginning of the year?

At the beginning of each year, rather than make a lofty resolution that is unattainable and sure to lower my self-esteem, I vow to become a better person, regularly commit to self-improvement, and discover ways to positively contribute to others. These basic lifestyle promises offer opportunities for me to thrive spiritually. Exhibiting love for myself supports my desire to serve my community. And at the end of each day, I can check in with myself and express gratitude for my progress. Sure feels good knowing that I am in alignment with how I want to evolve as a seasoned woman.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” In what ways are you serving your community?

Deciding how to serve can be challenging. Being a good friend, a good relative and a good citizen are at the core of everything we cherish. You want to give back, and at the same time, you want to be inspired by your choices. So how do you become a compassionate presence in the world? How do you make your resolutions and goals count for something really meaningful — something sustainable and functional?

I have an idea that can serve you and your community: Commit to self-improvement. Lace self with service and affirm your desire to grow as an individual.

I recently wrote an article called “Creating A More Loving World Begins With Personal Development,” for Sixty and Me, an online community designed to help women over 60 live happy, healthy and financially secure lives. My article reviews eight personal tools that could ultimately transform the world. Each suggestion focuses on self-development.

For example, I discuss how retraining your thoughts and tempering your words may chart your new experience as you venture forward. Another tip underscores emphatic listening, which has the potential to create a genuine space for engaging with others. A third method of self-expansion is forgiveness. Practicing being less judgmental of others and yourself is a healing habit that transmits positive vibrations beyond your shores.

Most people would prefer to live life authentically. No need to profess, alter and then abandon annual resolutions that feel overwhelming and difficult to achieve. In other words, rather than starting one goal and calling it quits — create an ongoing intention — something you continuously strive for that provides joy and satisfaction. Making and keeping self-improvement commitments complement every area of your life and may compel you to continue spreading your love and kindness. In this way, you are serving yourself and the entire universe.

Consider This
"Self-care is never a selfish act--it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others." -- Parker Palmer
