Your challenges can fuel your life purpose!
I wish the news covered more inspirational stories. There are so many people doing wonderful things in the world, but we seldom hear about them. Today, I’d like to share a story that I heard on public radio last year and read about in AARP The Magazine. If you need a little pick-me-up, this post may lift your heart and motivate you to move forward with your life goals.
From hardships to blessings
I’m shining the light on an amazing talent who was one of the most sought-after soul and gospel backing singers in the industry. She backed Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Coldplay and many more recording artists. You may recall her powerful vocals in the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” She was also featured in the Oscar-winning documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, highlighting the contributions of longtime backup singers. But it’s not Merry Clayton’s singing that I want to underscore; it’s her grit and determination.
In 2014, Merry lost both of her legs in a tragic car accident. Her story could have ended there, but she still had important work to do and a compelling message to share with the world. Apparently, Merry was encouraged by Lou Adler, a record and film producer, to continue using her voice to inspire others.
In 2021, her gorgeous new solo album, Beautiful Scars was released. The spiritual themes of hope, grace, faith and implacable fortitude are consistent threads throughout this collection. The entire album is uplifting, but my favorite song is “Beautiful Scars.” The following excerpts may drive you to strive for your voice.
I’ve been on the battlefield of life
I’ve been through it
But I just had to go through that
To get to this…
I tell my mature, seasoned sisters that they have a lot of years left and they deserve to live them to the fullest. Every experience has the potential to shape the person you are today. Don’t retreat from life — become your best life.
These are beautiful scars that I have on my heart
This is beautiful proof that I made it this far…
Wear it proud like a badge
Wear it like a tattoo…
Whatever your situation or current circumstances are, you’re still here for a reason, and that reason is to grow and brighten the path for others. Don’t minimize your gifts. The world needs people like you!
These are beautiful scars
I’m grateful for each one of them
I’m who I am because of them
I’m thankful everyday for my scars
Express thanksgiving for all the good in your life. Remember: There will be sunshine and rain. I like to view the major challenges I’ve overcome as transformative lessons. Without them, I wouldn’t have the strength and insight required to navigate this part of my journey.
Everybody’s got scars
They’re part of what makes you who you are
As spiritual beings having a human experience, we need each other. Are you open to turning your hardships into blessings? Your life experiences can ignite your inner fire to aspire higher. And your resolve to continue being your best sets a positive example for future generations.
