Most of my followers value their health and want to live their best life as they age. The main tenet that supports my vision for Lifestyle 120 is longevity. In order to celebrate yourself and all you wish to become, you must unapologetically commit to self-care, and now is the best time to start!
I’d like to encourage you to take our tenet to heart and know that you are not alone. Others are focused on extending their life trajectory out beyond the limitations of the 100-year marker.
I Decided to Live 120 Years!
Last year, I had the distinct pleasure to be interviewed by Dr. Joe Casciani, founder of the award-winning podcast, Living to 100 Club. Dr. Casciani’s specialty is geriatric mental health, and prior to the interview, he suggested I take a look at Ilchi Lee’s book, I Decided to Live 120 Years:The Ancient Secret to Longevity, Vitality, and Life Transformation because our precepts are aligned. Lee is a New York Times best-selling author, founder of a variety of mind-body training methods, and a humanitarian who has worked toward global peace for many years.
Today, I’d like to share some powerful ideas from Lee’s book that may inspire you to rethink your beliefs on wellness and what’s possible for you as you travel your path. The concepts are way too rich for one post, so I’ve organized my message into two parts. This post will focus on responsibility. Part Two, which will be published next week, will highlight the importance of taking action.
The overarching theme behind Lee’s book is the profound wording in the book’s title, “I’ve Decided.” People are living longer today, and there’s no guarantee that we will live to see 120, but deciding to live that long is what changes things. The proper mindset shapes our experiences. Lee says, “But by planning to live to be 120, we become stake holders in the future, and we can live with purpose and vision right up to our last day on earth.”
Lee calls the first 60 years our congenital destiny and the next 60 years our acquired destiny. Our congenital destiny is the destiny we were born with and the one the world has constantly imposed on us. Our acquired destiny is the destiny we create for ourselves by our own choices and effort.
Love. Integrity. Faith. Enthusiasm.
You’ve often heard me talk about choices. It’s the one thing we tend to forget as we age. My Spiritual LIFE Principles™ of Love, Integrity, Faith and Enthusiasm underscore our responsibility to demonstrate compassion for ourselves, commit to our choices in life, express conviction, and believe that the desires of our heart have already been fulfilled. Know that you have the authority to take command of your life through your thoughts, words and actions.
Further, Lee suggests that “everyone should keep this one precept in mind when designing a second half of a life centered on the value of completion; You have to create your own health, happiness, and peace; you cannot rely on someone else to provide them. If you are responsible for your health, happiness, and peace and take an active approach toward enhancing them, a longer lifespan will follow naturally.”
I hope these words of wisdom inspire you to “decide” to be proactive about your future. You have a lot of years left and you deserve to live them to the fullest. Your success begins with accepting responsibility for this time in your life. The possibilities of what you can accomplish are endless.
Lee continues, “A life of completion begins with providing for your own health, happiness, and peace by developing physical power, heart power, and brain power…We have come into this life for training, for spiritual practice. Everything you have experienced, good or bad, bitter or sweet, has been meaningful and has taught you. When you realize this, gratitude and peace begin to develop in your heart.”
View your life experiences as gifts.
As a seasoned adult, your age is an asset. You’re still here for a reason. And that reason is this is the season to shine your light. Be present for what’s next. Capitalize on your unique assets. Be grateful for this time in your life and begin viewing your age as an advantage. You are a treasure — you are a valuable resource! And you can help others gain a fresh perspective. It all begins with your thoughts, words and attitude.
Establish a mindset for health. What we think about we bring about. Our physical world reflects our consciousness. You must change your inner programming in order to manifest your good. In other words, you must reframe your thoughts and words in order to experience desired results. Lee says, “You can live your life with vision and passion, and you can do something which will make a real difference in this difficult world. It’s not too late.” He is certain that the second half of life can be your golden age — fulfilling and hopeful.
Lee believes, “The greatest regret many people have before dying is that they didn’t have the courage to live a life true to themselves.” In other words, you can live a long, satisfying life by choice, not by chance.
If you create a lifestyle that brings balance to body, mind and spirit, will you be able to defy the limitations of the 100-year marker and possibly extend that trajectory to 120? Lee declares, “We have come to earth for the growth and completion of our souls.” What a profound statement. So let’s get busy — we have important work to do!
