I’d like to ask you an important lifestyle question. How many times did you exercise within the last two weeks? A lot? Not enough? Don’t remember? I bet you would remember if you enjoyed the experience.
Why is regular fitness essential to our health? The list of benefits is quite long, so I’ll highlight five of the many reasons exercise is important to your well-being.
Exercise…
• Tones muscles and strengthens bones
• Increases energy levels
• Improves circulation and brain health
• Reduces risks of chronic diseases
• Elevates mood and disposition
You’re probably thinking, “Okay, I know I should be moving my body every day, but exercising is just so boring.” But what if your fitness routines resembled play instead of work? Would you then commit to exercising? In order to enjoy a sustainable fitness program, you must build fun and purpose into your workout.
Personally, I like variety—speed walking in nature, Pilates, yoga, dancing, and the gym. Spending time at the gym is not my favorite, but the weights and machines help improve my bone density.
A beneficial training routine does not have to be grueling. Focus on what would make you want to get up and go. What sports do you like? Chose one for a particular day of the week and schedule other activities for the other days. What else do you like? Bowling? Swimming? Zumba? Cycling? You’re more likely to maintain a fitness program if it’s enjoyable. Try to fit in one hour of exercise at least five days a week.
In another post, I’ll tell you about an exhilarating brain fitness class I teach that incorporates music. Until then, get moving.
Consider This
One hour of continuous housework or yardwork count for exercise. But how can you make it fun? Download some boogie-woogie pieces and dance around while you work.
