There’s no greater joy than making a meaningful contribution in someone else’s life...
What type of service activities are you involved in? Perhaps you’re volunteering or offering your time, talent and treasure in a variety of ways.
I’d like to encourage you to think more critically about your service activities. How did you get involved in philanthropic programs? How long have you been donating to your causes? Have your efforts been satisfying, fulfilling and valued? My queries are leading to a bigger question that some of you may have recently pondered: Are you volunteering simply out of obligation — and do you want to be more authentic about sharing your time and energy?
Take a few minutes and reflect on your whats and whys...
What and why are you giving? And what do you hope to gain? Perhaps you’ve never thought about philanthropy in this way. We’re all creatures of habit and don’t always consider lifestyle changes unless a situation arises that demands a conscious shift. Personally, I tend to structure my days and activities around habits I’ve mastered. But sometimes it’s important to ask if there’s a better way.
So if you find yourself giving back because you think it’s the right thing to do, I suggest you meditate on balancing your charitable activities with your goals and life’s purpose. For instance, you may be helping with community projects because a friend requested your assistance. But do you like it? If it’s a great cause and you’re motivated to continue offering your support, wonderful!
However, if you’re not enthusiastic, you may want to reevaluate your service activities so they align with who you are. Consider other opportunities. Research what’s available in your area of interest. And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, start something of your own.
Serving out of obligation is not sustainable...
You must recognize value in your service, and you must feel valued for donating your time. In other words, you’ve got to love what you’re doing. You will discover greater joy when your volunteer work is in sync with your passions and purpose.
