In our ongoing Purposeful Nutrition Series, we’ve been exploring ways to support longevity. Besides your food choices, there’s another way to harness the energy of nature and draw it into your daily life: Embrace the healing power of light.
Does your home provide enough light to inspire the creative process? One thing that sold me on my current home was the abundance of windows. But even if you don’t have many windows, there are ways to turn on the light.
Draw in natural light
First, declutter your home. Do you have furniture and other stuff blocking the natural light in your place? Stacks of boxes and a plethora of things you no longer need can dim your space and darken your mood. This season, take inventory and begin a donation pile. Set a time, say two weeks, and go room by room. Not only will you feel lighter, the light will find you and spark your imagination. For more inspiration on the topic of decluttering, check out a former post called How to Declutter Your Home And Embrace Your Space.
Now, let’s talk about your windows
What type of window treatments do you have? Curtains or drapes? Blinds or roller shades? Shutters? When I moved into my current home, I decided to go with plantation shutters throughout. In the past, we always decorated our windows with drapes and curtains. Tired of the dust collection, the dry cleaning expenses, and rehanging window dressings, all I have to do now is vacuum and wipe with a damp cloth. The main benefit is more light! Moving the tilt rod up or down enables me to adjust the amount of light to suit my senses.
Will changing your window treatments help you see more clearly?

Other ways to bring light and warmth to your home
Improve your interior glow! Is it time to trade in your old fixtures for an attractive lighting collection? Visit Home Depot, Menards, lighting boutiques and furniture stores to stimulate ideas that complement your personality. If your objective is to create serene surroundings, coordinating the fixtures throughout your home may help you achieve peace and harmony.
Also, have you considered candles? Designating an area for candles and lighting them in the evening, can help prepare you for a restful night. Candles have the potential to positively transform a room within seconds.
Don’t make the mistake of postponing pleasurable experiences. Last winter, I got so caught up with my to-do list that I didn’t take the time to enjoy my fireplace. But not this year! I’m becoming more consciously aware of my need to luxuriate in the now and pursue the simple things in life. The more time I spend at home, the more I require a nurturing ambience.
Practicing self-care involves feeling powerful in every area of your life — committing to proper nutrition, nurturing loving relationships, getting proper rest, scheduling physical activity, engaging in meaningful service, working your purpose, and creating an inspiring home environment. Appreciate the healing power of light. Enliven your home with natural and décor lighting.
Consider This
Invent your own tapestry of lights. Erin Morgenstern, multimedia artist and novelist said, “I'm a firm believer that lighting affects mood, and twinkly lights on strings bring something magical to occasions ranging from concerts to weddings, though I'm fond of using them as year-round home decor.”
Another idea is to lighten your walls with paint. Click here to review a recent post inspired by nature.
