As you reposition yourself for greatness, what are you doing to boost your brainpower?
You may recall my blog post called “Stimulate Your Brain And Stay Sharp: Learn To Play A Musical Instrument,” published earlier this year. In that post, I highlighted the multiple cognitive benefits of playing a musical instrument.
Today, I’d like to spotlight another multidimensional learning experience that can help keep your mind agile and sharp. Hablas español? Stay smart while engaging with a diverse group of people — learn a new language. Unlike music lessons, learning a foreign language requires regular interaction with people, especially if you intend to become fluent.
What would acquiring a new language be like for you?
Research shows that learning a new language can improve thinking, memory and communication skills. Not only will you learn to speak the language, you’ll also become knowledgeable about the culture, customs and history of that country. And if you’re taking a comprehensive course, you’ll be required to practice daily, and read and write in your chosen language. Fluency demands total engagement and is a full brain workout, launching you into a massive learning curve. And there’s more: Your practice sessions will enhance creativity and problem solving, as well as more enjoyable travel experiences.
One of my lifelong dreams is to speak Spanish fluently. I took classes in high school and college, and advanced to a level where I could read stories at a basic level. I still have my first mystery novel from my high school Spanish II class and libros en español by Pablo Nerudo from a humanities course I took in college. Currently, my wellness business demands my full attention. However, I know that when I establish a sincere goal for speaking Spanish with confidence, I’ll need to immerse myself in the language by spending an extended period of time abroad.
There are many online programs that make learning a new language fun and manageable, but you must be committed in order to achieve success. Also, there may be opportunities to practice using your newfound skills through community centers and service organizations. Switching back and forth between two languages takes skill, practice and patience, but the experience will be incredibly rewarding!
Consider This
If your purpose and passion are somehow tied to another culture, perhaps you may want to investigate opportunities and programs in the country of your choice. Could a special interest in international ministry, rainforest preservation, shamanism, French architecture, and the history of indigenous Australians lead you on the path to self-discovery?
Four Steps to Nourish, Transform and Flourish
• Set a loving intention to explore the possibility of learning a foreign language.
• Begin by investigating online programs or offerings at community colleges in your area.
• How will learning to speak, read and write another language elevate you to a higher level?
• Close your eyes and visualize how this lifestyle change can prepare you for your amazing second half.
